Quartier Latin/Saint Germain/Le Marais
This district is very popular with students, as it contains several universities and other prestigious institutes of higher education, such as the Sorbonne, Jussieu and Les Beaux Arts. But the Latin Quarter was also the hang-out for many French intellectuals, such as Jean Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, who liked to meet at the Café de Flore. We mustn’t forget the Jardin du Luxembourg, one of the biggest public parks in the capital and home to the Senate.
The Marais, historically the centre of the city, is a very lively area, particularly popular with the gay community, where elegant private mansions, museums and designer shops are to be found alongside the numerous bars.
